Fighting Back

I’m not the first nor the best person to say this but if you are scared or angered by the authoritarian Trump regime’s attempts to wrest absolute power from the other branches of government, you are not alone and it’s ok to feel shitty or depressed and full of despair. Trump is trying to ‘flood the zone’ by committing an overwhelming bombardment of crimes against humanity via executive order after executive order.

You are not alone. There are a lot of good people in the same place, but if there is hope to be found; shit like this has happened before, and you can fight back. The next four years won’t be easy, but you can give your voice and effort to the collective resistance.

Doing so has more power than you might think. And people’s rightful outrage is having an effect:

So if you want to do something but you aren’t sure where to start, you can find locally organized resistance groups at indivisible.org, which list local protests and other resistance actions.  Besides links to local actions the site published a handbook guide called “INDIVISIBLE: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO DEMOCRACY ON THE BRINK”  at https://indivisible.org/resource/guide  which is aimed at newcomers to activism.

You can also visit aclu.org/action for more ways to help or find like-minded folks at reddit.com/r/50501/  and reddit.com/r/Political_Revolution/ And you can use commoncause.org/find-your-representative to reach out to your elected representatives to speak your mind.

For issues based actions:

To help immigrants and asylum seekers visit https://www.immigrationadvocates.org/nonprofit/volunteer/ or the National Immigration Law Center https://www.nilc.org/action/ for volunteering opportunities.

For pro-trans activism there’s transequality.org/take-action, https://transgenderlawcenter.org/volunteer/,  and https://www.thetaskforce.org/get-involved/

You can also directly support affected people you know or follow online by donating to their crowdfunding efforts, and also by making sure they are doing ok. Caring for friends or acquaintances who might be affected can really make almost as much of an impact as direct mutual aid.

As a trans person I’m definitely in the administration’s sights and while direct mutual aid is definitely lifesaving sometimes folks just checking in with me reminds me folks still give a damn and helps fight the despair of it all.

But also?  Take of yourself too. Talk with your friends, family and social circles about these issues if you can do so while being safe. Most importantly, take care to give yourself space to process your feelings. Make sure to take care of your own mental health needs. For some people, that’s disconnecting from doom scrolling 24/7, for others it’s journaling, or just practicing mindfulness or art therapy (drawing with music on really helps me)

Sf you are deep in feelings, remember you are not alone.

You can take small steps to make space for your worries while helping others stop the oligarchy’s puppet. Yes it’s exhausting. Resisting is hard when you are subjected to the constant acts of horror, but if you want to effect change, you must do exactly that, as much and as loudly as you can.

Trans people, immigrants, and other targeted minorities need your voice. Do not let the Trumpian blitzkrieg silence you. You have more power than you think and fighting back is incredibly powerful when done collectively. And it’s not like you have to do it all alone.

If you’re like me, dealing with chronic debilitating pain or illness, focusing on whatever you can do day-by-day is enough. Even if some days just taking care of yourself is all you can do.

Thanks for reading this.
